Day 42 — Evening

April 10, 2026 · 5:30 PM ET

Day 42 — Evening — Iranian Delegation Lands Islamabad — Vance En Route: 'Going To Be Positive' — Ghalibaf: Blocked Assets + Lebanon Ceasefire First — Iran Military: Hormuz Not Yielded — 2 Ships Friday Lowest Since Ceasefire — Brent Settled $95.20 — S&P +3.6% Week Best Since November — Pope Leo: God Does Not Bless Conflict — L'Arc d'Trump Filed — James Blair Leave of Absence for Midterms

Bottom Line

Day 42. Evening update. 5:30 PM ET.

The delegation has landed.

Iranian parliament speaker Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Araghchi touched down in Islamabad in the early hours of Saturday morning, Pakistan time. Vance is in the air. Witkoff and Kushner are with him. The room is setting.

But read what Ghalibaf brought with him to the airport: a public demand on X that Iran's blocked assets be released and a Lebanon ceasefire be implemented before talks begin. He did not walk that back on the plane. He landed with those conditions on record.

Iran's military simultaneously posted that it will not give up its legitimate rights in any way over the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC warned of a crushing response if Israel continues its Lebanon operations.

Both sides are arriving at the table having filed maximalist positions publicly, in writing, today.

That is the game. Everyone does it. The question is whether Pakistan can build a floor between the two opening positions before one side walks or the other publishes another precondition.

The Hormuz picture is the tell. Two ships crossed Friday. That is the lowest count since the ceasefire Tuesday. The pattern is going the wrong direction. Four Wednesday. Four Thursday. Two Friday. Hundreds still waiting on both sides. Iran is not operating the strait — it is rationing the strait. That distinction is doing enormous economic work right now.

The European airports letter to the EU is the canary. Three weeks from systemic jet fuel shortage if Hormuz does not reopen in a significant and stable way. The ceasefire expires April 21. The fuel clock expires approximately May 1. They are not synchronized.

The week ends with the S&P up 3.6% — best weekly performance since November. Markets priced hope Tuesday through Thursday. Friday closed -0.1%. The divergence between equity optimism and physical oil reality is the central tension in every portfolio right now.

Pope Leo XIV posted today that God does not bless any conflict. An American pope is now in public theological disagreement with an American defense secretary who runs prayer services calling for violence against enemies. The Vatican is doing political work right now.

Trump filed a 250-foot triumphal arch near Arlington. James Blair is preparing to leave the White House to run the midterms. The legacy play is operating on multiple tracks simultaneously.

The room opens shortly.

Watch Ghalibaf first. Does he enter the proximity format under his own stated conditions, or does he find a formulation that lets Pakistan declare both sides are talking? That delta is the entire story for the next 12 hours.

Primary Regime Summary

ISLAMABAD TONIGHT — VANCE EN ROUTE — IRAN CONFIRMS 10-POINT BASIS: Vance departed Friday morning telling reporters: we are looking forward to the negotiation, I think it is going to be positive. Iran's deputy FM simultaneously confirmed Iran's 10-point plan will be the basis for talks. Both sides moving toward the room. The meeting opens Saturday morning Islamabad time — tonight Friday evening Eastern. Islamabad runs 9 hours ahead of ET. Lebanon remains Iran's stated condition: foreign ministry says no Islamabad without Lebanon in the ceasefire. Netanyahu said there is no ceasefire in Lebanon. Both delegations coming anyway. Key agenda: HEU 970 lbs, Hormuz access architecture, enrichment rights, sanctions relief.

CPI CONFIRMED 3.3% — ENERGY +12.5% — GASOLINE RECORD MONTHLY RISE: March CPI confirmed at 8:32 AM: 3.3% annual from 2.4% — highest 12-month rate of Trump's second term. Energy component +12.5%, above estimates. Gasoline up 25% in March alone — largest single-month percentage increase on record since EIA began tracking in 1990. Gas now $4.15/gallon. Airlines, shippers, retailers layering surcharges. Core inflation held at 2.6% YoY — energy shock not yet fully in services. Real wages fell 0.9% in March. OECD projects US inflation at 4.2% this year. Fed holds at 3.5-3.75%. Growing cohort open to rate hikes. Market reaction subdued — S&P edging lower, bond yields down.

MARKETS LIVE: ASIA STRONG — CRUDE $98.39 — GOLD $4,782 — BTC $71,773: Asia: Japan +1.8%, HK +0.6%, China +0.5%, India +1.2%. Europe: London +0.3%, Paris +0.8%, Frankfurt +0.9%. Dow -0.1%, S&P flat, Nasdaq +0.1%. Crude $98.39 (+0.5%). Gold $4,782.50 (-0.7%). Bitcoin $71,773 (+0.5%) — gaining on Iran bitcoin toll story and Morgan Stanley ETF flows. 10-Year Treasury 4.30% (+1bp). Brent $97. Physical spot cargoes $145 — a $48 spread between what diplomacy is pricing and what physical supply is pricing.

HORMUZ BITCOIN TOLLS — OPERATIONAL: Iran collecting $2M/VLCC in bitcoin. Per Hamid Hosseini, Iran oil exporters union: vessels are given seconds to pay in bitcoin once IRGC completes assessment — untraceable, unsanctionable. Iran crypto ecosystem $7.8B in 2025 per Chainalysis. 15 ships crossed since Tuesday ceasefire vs 138/day pre-war. Nearly 800 ships stranded. Western shippers face legal trap: paying the IRGC may violate US sanctions. Iran's deputy FM confirmed the 10-point plan — which institutionalizes this Hormuz architecture — is the basis for Islamabad.

LATAM BOARD MOVING — VENEZUELA 100 DAYS RODRIGUEZ — CUBA — SUPER EL NINO: Venezuela: US lifted 2018 sanctions on Rodriguez this week. Chevron targeting +50% Venezuelan oil output in 2 years. Oliveros projects GDP +12-15% this year. But inflation remains 600%+ and Rodriguez has only 9% support vs 63% for Maria Corina Machado. Cuba: 2,000+ prisoners freed — none political prisoners per rights groups. Russian oil tanker docked in Havana without US intervention. Super El Nino warning: European forecasters project 2 degrees Celsius above average Pacific for 2026 — Panama Canal disruption risk, Caribbean droughts, Ecuador/Peru flooding. Combined with Iran war fuel and fertilizer prices, dual pressure on global food system building.

EUROPEAN ENERGY LEVER — ECB RATE HIKE BETS BUILDING: European gas prices approximately 40% above pre-war. Eurozone inflation jumped to 2.5% in March from 1.9% in February. Traders betting on at least two ECB quarter-point rate hikes this year — marked turnaround from pre-war rate-cut expectations. Bank of England faces same pressure: UK inflation above 3% pre-conflict, projected 3.5% in March. Lagarde: impact will linger because restoring Gulf energy production takes time. EU storage: Netherlands 6%, Germany 22%, EU average 28% vs 90% December target. Summer refill window open but physical Hormuz closure means LNG flows not normalized. Ryanair summer schedule at risk.

WHITE HOUSE BANS PREDICTION MARKET BETS — ARTEMIS II SPLASHDOWN TONIGHT: White House internal directive banning staff from Polymarket and Kalshi. An acknowledgment that pre-knowledge was exploitable — confirms the war-telegram thesis. Artemis II crew splashes down off San Diego around 8 PM tonight — same window as Islamabad opening. First humans near the moon in 53 years returning the same evening as the most consequential US-Iran diplomacy since 1979. Kevin Warsh Fed chair confirmation reportedly hitting a snag.

Delta Log

Day 42 Midday — Islamabad Proximity Format: No Face-To-Face — Shuttle Diplomacy Only — Iran: Hormuz Is Biggest Political Chip — Case-By-Case Passage Rewarding Friendly Countries — Spot $145 Futures $109 Gap Widest In 20 Years — Trump: Iran Has No Cards — Vance: Don't Play Us — MAGA Civil War Confirmed — UK 53% View US Negatively — European Jet Fuel 3-Week Warning — Ukraine 10-Year Oil Deals With Gulf States — Day 42 midday. Islamabad talks structure confirmed by Al Jazeera: proximity format — US and Iran delegations in separate rooms at Serena Hotel, Pakistani officials shuttling messages between them. No face-to-face meeting. Pakistan has experience with this format — participated in 1988 Geneva Accords indirect talks on Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan. Pakistan's stated goal: get parties to agree to continue talking, not achieve a breakthrough. That is the ceiling they are working toward. Trump on Truth Social Friday: the Iranians don't seem to realize they have no cards other than short-term extortion of the world using international waterways. The only reason they are alive today is to negotiate. Vance before departure: if they try to play us, the team is not receptive. Simultaneously Iran parliamentary speaker Ghalibaf posted his own precondition: Lebanon ceasefire and release of Iran's blocked assets must happen before negotiations begin. That is a public pre-condition filed from the Islamabad delegation. Iran as Hormuz political gatekeeper — NYT analysis: Iran keeping a chokehold on the strait, giving priority to countries that trade with Iran or are not viewed as hostile. France's CMA CGM became first Western European vessel to transit — the day after Macron publicly criticized Trump over war management and NATO criticism. Per Martin Kelly of EOS Risk Group: France has positioned itself as not aligned with the US on the war — it was a message to the rest of Europe. Turkey (active neutrality, got 3 ships through), Pakistan (ceasefire broker), India (purchased first Iranian oil in 7 years), all transiting. Countries that backed the US: waiting. NYT reports nearly 1,000 ships waiting to enter or exit the Persian Gulf. Iran's deputy FM: strait is open to all but there are still mines and ships need to coordinate with Iranian military. The oil shock is worse than futures prices show per NYT: Brent futures ~$109, spot cargoes ~$145 — widest gap in 20 years per Argus Media data. 10% or more of global oil supply shut in. Vietnam and Thailand gas stations turned customers away. Sri Lanka declared public holiday Wednesdays. March CPI per BLS: 3.3% annual, gasoline +21.2% in March. MAGA civil war confirmed by document: Trump on Truth Social attacked Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens, Alex Jones by name — they are stupid people, know it's the opposite of MAGA. They know it. Owens: may be time to put Grandpa in a home. MTG: president has gone mad. Jones: mind control spell from Netanyahu. Greene: I fought alongside Tucker, Megyn, Candace and Alex — now he attacks all of us. UK Politico/Public First poll April 3-7: 53% of Brits now view US as negative force globally, up from 35% December. 65% say America tends to create problems. 57% say US challenges its allies. 49% say US cannot be depended upon in a crisis. All metrics up sharply in 5 months. ACI Europe letter to EU transport commissioner: if Hormuz does not resume significant and stable passage within 3 weeks, systemic jet fuel shortage is set to become a reality — would severely disrupt airport operations and connectivity. Ukraine Politico: Zelensky confirmed 10-year defense pacts with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE — Ukraine soldiers deployed to Middle East fight Iranian drones, receives crude oil, diesel, missile interceptors, financial assistance in return. Similar agreements in the works with Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain. Zelensky confirmed enough fuel secured for next year. Kyiv getting crude delivered to European refineries for processing. Netanyahu expelled Spain from Gaza coordination centre Friday after Madrid closed airspace to US warplanes. Israel-Lebanon talks set for Washington next week.

Day 42 Mid-Morning — Mr. Robert: Midterm Miracle Window — Nobody Cares Before Labor Day — April 10 Plus 5 Months = Sept 10 = The Tell — Xi Meets Taiwan Nationalist Party: Invited Xi To Visit — Rubio Absent Watch Western Hemisphere — Trump Deploys Counterterrorism Against Far Left — Louisiana Race Three-Way Open — EU Pulse Forum: 70% Back EU Army — DMA Self-Congratulation While World Moves — Day 42 mid-morning. Mr. Robert editorial: the midterm miracle thesis. Teflon Don — his political instincts non-replicable. The Italian-American community organizer who grabbed me by both shoulders in July: nobody fucking cares about this shit before Labor Day. He was right. April 10 + 5 months = September 10 = Labor Day weekend. If deals close in the next two weeks — Iran framework, Ukraine settlement, Cuba — the economic trickle-back timeline (4-6 months, call it 5) lands people feeling it in September. Registers speak. Pump price speaks. Does Congress matter? Not really now. Even if Dems flip a chamber — subpoenas, Schumer dreams. But if economy turns in September with global peace portfolio — all bets are off. Rubio conspicuously absent this week. Watch for SOS to surface in Western Hemisphere shortly. Cuba is next. Xi met Taiwan Nationalist Party leader Cheng Li-wun in Beijing Friday — first in a decade. Message: Taiwan's future lies with Beijing not Washington. Cheng invited Xi to visit Taiwan. Timed before Xi-Trump summit next month — Xi preemptively chipping at US-Taiwan architecture before facing Trump. Taiwan governing party denounced meeting as framework for unification. Trump deploys counterterrorism machine against far left — Gorka adding antifa to National Intelligence Priorities Framework. State Dept designated 4 European leftist groups as terrorists. European allies skeptical. Resources diverted from Iran threat teams. Louisiana Senate: Letlow still leading at 29% but Cassidy and Fleming live. MAGA Inc has $300M but hasn't spent a dollar. Letlow attacked for DEI comments and defense stock trading. EU Pulse Forum: 70% back EU-led defense vs 12% NATO — structural shift. US not acting as ally per EU Parliament VP. Ribera calls DMA a success story. Séjourné: accept Chinese investment. Sánchez going to China Saturday.

Day 42 Morning Update — CPI Confirmed 3.3% Energy +12.5% Gasoline Record Rise — Vance En Route Islamabad: Positive Tone — Iran: 10-Point Plan Is Basis — Venezuela 100 Days Rodriguez GDP +12-15% — Cuba 2,000 Prisoners Russia Tanker — Super El Nino Warning — ECB Rate Hike Bets Building — Markets: Crude $98.39 Gold $4,782 BTC $71,773 — Day 42 morning update. CPI confirmed at 8:32 AM: 3.3% annual from 2.4% — highest 12-month rate of Trump's second term. Energy component +12.5%, above estimates. Gasoline up 25% in March — largest single-month percentage increase on record per EIA data going back to 1990. Gas now $4.15/gallon. Core inflation held at 2.6% YoY — energy shock not yet fully in services. Real wages fell 0.9% in March. Airlines, shippers, retailers all adding surcharges. OECD projects US inflation at 4.2% this year. Market reaction subdued per NYT: S&P edging lower, bond yields ticking down. Fed holds at 3.5-3.75%. Growing cohort of officials now open to rate hikes. Vance told reporters before departing: we are looking forward to the negotiation, I think it is going to be positive. If the Iranians negotiate in good faith we extend an open hand. If they try to play us the team is not receptive. Iran deputy FM Takht Ravanchi simultaneously confirmed Iran's 10-point plan will be the basis for Islamabad negotiations. Both sides moving toward the room. Markets live: Asia Japan +1.8%, HK +0.6%, China +0.5%, India +1.2%. Europe: London +0.3%, Paris +0.8%, Frankfurt +0.9%. US futures: Dow -0.1%, S&P flat, Nasdaq +0.1%. Crude +0.5% to $98.39. Gold -0.7% to $4,782.50. Bitcoin +0.5% to $71,773. 10Y +1bp to 4.30%. FP LatAm brief Friday: Venezuela 100 days Rodriguez — US lifted 2018 sanctions this week. Chevron +50% Venezuelan oil output in 2 years. Oliveros GDP +12-15% forecast. But inflation 600%+ and Rodriguez has only 9% support vs 63% for Machado. Cuba: 2,000+ prisoners released as humanitarian gesture — none political prisoners per rights groups. Russian oil tanker docked in Havana without US intervention. Super El Nino warning: European forecasters project 2 degrees Celsius above average Pacific temps for 2026 — Panama Canal disruption risk, Caribbean droughts, Ecuador/Peru flooding. Former WFP director Cousin in FP: dual pressure of Iran war fuel prices and El Nino converging on global food crisis. European energy: gas +40% above pre-war, Eurozone inflation 2.5% March from 1.9% February, traders pricing at least 2 ECB rate hikes this year. BOE facing same pressure. EU storage: Netherlands 6%, Germany 22%, EU average 28% vs 90% December target. Index moves: energy +4 (82), latam +2 (82), legacy +1 (94 signal 99 discount 5).

Day 42 Morning — Islamabad Tonight — Vance vs Ghalibaf — Lebanon Still Fracture Point — March CPI 3.3% Confirmed 8:32 AM — Brent $97 Futures Spot $145 Backwardation — 15 Ships Since Ceasefire vs 138/Day Pre-War — Bloomberg Russia-Ukraine Peace Signal — Mr. Robert Pivot Marker — Hegseth Press Ruling Voided Again — 2028 Democratic Field Visible — Day 42 morning. Islamabad begins tonight — Saturday morning Pakistan time. Vance, Witkoff, and Kushner en route. Ghalibaf leads Iran. Highest-level US-Iran engagement since 1979. Iran pre-game: Mojtaba Khamenei 10-page statement — declared victory, demanded compensation for every damage and blood money for every martyr, announced new phase of Hormuz management. Filed publicly before delegations sat down. Lebanon fracture: Israel launched fresh Hezbollah strikes Friday morning. Netanyahu: no ceasefire in Lebanon. Iran foreign ministry spokesman: won't attend Islamabad if ceasefire not extended to Lebanon. Both delegations en route anyway — deferred not resolved. BBC Verify ship-tracking as of 10 AM BST: 15 ships crossed since ceasefire, only 4 tankers carrying oil/gas/chemicals. Pre-war: 138 ships/day. Nearly 800 ships stranded inside the Gulf. Brent futures ~$97. Spot cargo near $145 per NYT — $48 backwardation prices physical crunch separate from diplomatic optimism. Iran Larak detour: ships must coordinate with IRGC, fees in yuan or stablecoins, sanctions exposure per shipping lawyers. March CPI at 8:30 AM: expected 3.3% annual from 2.4% — first major post-war inflation read. Bloomberg Morning Briefing running story on Zelensky's top military aide Budanov expressing optimism about Russia-Ukraine peace deal. Mr. Robert marker filed: if deal materializes, watch pivot to LatAm (Cuba, Colombia, Panama), Asia Pacific, and Greenland resolution. Western Hemisphere consolidation thesis does not stop at Iran. Trump thinks in portfolios. He told you Cuba is next. The final Greenland deal will likely include joint military, technology, and mineral rights access. Hegseth press restrictions voided second time by Judge Friedman: curtailment of First Amendment rights dangerous at any time, even more so in time of war. Pentagon plans to appeal. Rutte-Trump details confirmed by POLITICO: Trump ranted for hours about allies refusing base access for Iran attacks. No specific demands made. Spain FM: NATO has no involvement in this war. Bilderberg in Washington with Rutte April 10-12 — simultaneous with Islamabad. 2028 Democratic field visible: Harris and Buttigieg both at Rev. Sharpton NAN convention in NYC today. Slotkin: lot of baggage with Biden-era candidates, voters want something new. Gallego and Slotkin floated runs. Ukraine confirmed shooting down Iranian drones in Middle East countries during war — Zelensky filing for reconstruction seat. South Korea sending special envoy to Iran for Hormuz passage for 26 stranded Korean ships. Death tolls: Iran 1,701+ civilians including 254 children. Lebanon 1,500+ plus 303 killed Wednesday. Death toll confirmation for Day 42. Index moves: conflict +2 (62), energy +2 (78), vance_rubio +2 (95), russia +2 (85), latam +2 (80), legacy +2 (93, signal 99, discount 6), nato -1 (5), legitimacy -1 (6).

Pinned Cards

Hormuz Is Iran's Biggest Political Chip: Case-By-Case Passage, Rewarding Countries Not Hostile To Tehran — France CMA CGM First Western European Vessel — Turkey India Pakistan Transiting — US Allies Waiting

Iran Controlling Strait Based On Political Alignment — CMA CGM Through Day After Macron Criticized Trump — Kelly EOS: Message To Rest Of Europe — 1,000 Ships Waiting — Iran Deputy FM: Mines Still In Water, Must Coordinate With Military

NYT reporting Friday confirms the post-ceasefire Hormuz architecture: Iran is not reopening the strait universally. Iran is operating a political gatekeeper system — rewarding countries that trade with Iran or are not viewed as hostile, and keeping US-aligned countries waiting. France's CMA CGM became the first Western European-owned vessel to transit the strait since Iran imposed restrictions. The transit came the day after President Macron publicly lashed out at Trump over war management and NATO criticism. Per Martin Kelly of EOS Risk Group: France has positioned itself as not aligned with the US on the war and so not hostile to Iran. It was probably a message to the rest of Europe. Turkey has 15 ships and 150+ sailors stranded. It got 3 through pre-ceasefire by leveraging longstanding trade and diplomatic relations with Iran — Turkey took a position of active neutrality. India secured passage for 8 Indian-flagged ships before the ceasefire and confirmed its first Iranian oil purchase in 7 years. Pakistan brokered the ceasefire and hosts the Islamabad talks. Iran's deputy FM said the strait is open to all but acknowledged mines remain in the water and ships wanting passage need to coordinate with the Iranian military. Nearly 1,000 ships are waiting to enter or exit the Persian Gulf. At the current trickle, only a fraction will be allowed to transit before the two-week ceasefire expires. Mr. Robert read: this is not a Hormuz that reopens with a diplomatic announcement. This is a Hormuz that reopens country by country, deal by deal, as countries demonstrate they are not hostile to Iran. The entire post-war global trade and energy architecture is being sorted through this chokepoint.

The Oil Shock Is Worse Than You Think: Spot Cargoes $145 vs Brent Futures $109 — $36 Gap Is Widest In 20 Years — Argus Media — The Futures Market Is Not Representing Reality

Physical Spot Price vs Financial Futures Price Gap Dwarfs Any Prior Period In 20 Years — Vietnam Thailand Gas Stations Turned Customers Away — Sri Lanka Public Holiday Wednesdays — 10%+ Of Global Oil Supply Shut In

NYT analysis Friday: the widely-quoted Brent futures price (~$109) does not capture the scale of the physical oil supply shock. In the market where energy companies actually buy liquid oil transported on ships, the spot price reached approximately $145 per barrel — a record and more than double the pre-war price. The $36 gap between spot and futures is the widest in 20 years of Argus Media data, dwarfing even the Covid-19 pandemic and Russia-Ukraine war spreads. Per Vikas Dwivedi, global energy strategist at Macquarie: the futures market is not representing the on-the-ground and on-the-water reality of oil at all. It's quite broken. Chevron CEO Mike Wirth at CERAWeek: physical prices and physical supplies reflect a tighter market than the forward curve reflects. Estimates indicate companies have turned off 10% or more of global oil supply since the war started. Gas stations in Vietnam and Thailand turned away customers saying they had no fuel. Sri Lanka declared every Wednesday a public holiday. Many countries mandated remote work. The two-week ceasefire sent futures prices down sharply — but very little changed on the ground. The physical price tells you how tight everything is right now per Jason Gabelman, TD Cowen. Mr. Robert read: the market is pricing two different realities. Futures price the diplomatic track. Spot prices price the physical supply chain. They are not connected right now. Until 50+ ships are crossing Hormuz daily, the physical crunch remains regardless of what is announced in Islamabad.

Trump Attacks MAGA Allies By Name: Tucker, Megyn, Candace, Jones — They're Stupid People, The Opposite of MAGA — They Fire Back — MTG: President Has Gone Mad

Trump Truth Social: They All Want Iran To Have Nuclear Weapon — Low IQs — Owens: Put Grandpa In A Home — Jones: Mind Control By Netanyahu — MTG: I Fought Alongside Tucker Megyn Candace And Alex — Greene: He Has Gone Mad

Politico Thursday: Trump attacked Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens, and Alex Jones by name on Truth Social, accusing them of wanting Iran to have a nuclear weapon. This is the first named counterattack on the MAGA populist critics who called for his removal under the 25th Amendment after his civilization threat on April 7. Trump: they know it, their families know it, and everyone else knows it too. Look at their past, look at their record. Their views are the opposite of MAGA. Said he now refuses to take their calls. Owens responded: it may be time to put Grandpa up in a home. Jones: we hope and pray that President Trump wakes up from the mind control spell that the Never Trumper Neo-Cons and Netanyahu have put him under. MTG: President Trump has gone mad as he wages war against Iran, a broken campaign promise. I fought alongside Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens, and Alex Jones to help get Trump elected. Mr. Robert read: Trump is drawing the line. You are either with the war or you are with Iran having a nuclear weapon. That reframe is designed to permanently terminate the MAGA anti-war lane. When a president attacks his own base by name it means the fracture was real and visible enough to require a response. He would have ignored it otherwise. The civil war in the MAGA coalition is now documented and public.

Mr. Robert Editorial: The Midterm Miracle Window — Nobody Cares Before Labor Day — April 10 Plus 5 Months Equals September 10 — Watch The Next Two Weeks For A Deal

The Teflon Don Thesis — Midterm Calculus — Peace Deal Trickle-Back Timeline — Does Congress Even Matter? — Rubio Absent: Cuba Watch — Labor Day Is The Economic Tell

Here is the midterm miracle thesis. Trump is Teflon Don for a reason. His political instincts are extraordinary and non-replicable — the uncertainty weapon is uniquely his. No one else deploys it the same way because they are not Donald Trump. The first campaign I ran in New York City had a primary in early September. Around July Fourth I met a community organizer — a donor wrangler, a get-things-done type. Italian-American gentleman, booming New York accent, grabbed me by both shoulders and said: nobody fucking cares about this shit before Labor Day. He was right then. He is right now. Today is April 10th. Five months from today is September 10th. Labor Day is September 7th. That is the window. Here is how the miracle works. If Vance closes a deal in the next two weeks — real framework, HEU addressed, Hormuz open — and that is followed by a Ukraine-Russia settlement and Cuba follows (Rubio conspicuously absent this week — watch for the SOS to surface in the Western Hemisphere shortly) — you have a portfolio of peace deals that changes the global economic architecture. Most economists put the trickle-back timeline at four to six months. Call it five months. Five months from a May deal = October results. People start feeling it in September. The registers speak. The pump price speaks. Does Congress even matter right now? Not really. Trump controls both chambers today. Even if Democrats flip one chamber — what does that produce? More subpoenas. Chuck Schumer dreaming of one more round. Not a governing majority. Not a real threat to the architecture already built. But if the economy is turning in September and Trump has delivered global peace — all bets are off. Watch for a deal in the next two weeks. This is the critical window. Not because of the midterms. Because of the timeline.

Two more dates that matter. September 11th, 2026 is the 25th anniversary of the attacks. If the President has delivered peace in the Middle East, a Russia-Ukraine settlement, and made the world measurably more secure — that date hits different. The man who says he ended the wars, standing at the 25th anniversary of the day that started them. That is not a political moment. That is a legacy moment. The imagery writes itself.

And July 4th, 2026 is the 250th anniversary of the United States. Trump is going all out — and why would he not. The Semiquincentennial, a once-in-a-generation national moment, lands in his second term. If he arrives at that date with peace deals in hand and an economy beginning to recover — the symbolism compounds. Peace abroad, prosperity returning, 250 years of American power on full display. That is the arc he is building toward. Whether he gets there is the question. The next two weeks are the first test.

Xi Meets Taiwan Nationalist Party Leader — First In A Decade — Cheng Li-wun Invited Xi To Visit Taiwan — Message: Future Lies With Beijing Not Washington — Timed Before Xi-Trump Summit Next Month

Xi: Compatriots On Both Sides Are Chinese — One Family — Cheng: Invited Xi To Visit Taiwan Outlying Islands — Taiwan Governing Party Denounced Meeting — Read As Preemptive Move Before Xi-Trump Summit

Xi Jinping met Cheng Li-wun, chairwoman of Taiwan's Nationalist Party (Kuomintang), in Beijing on Friday — the first sitting Nationalist Party leader in a decade to hold talks with Xi. The message was delivered without ambiguity: Taiwan's future lies with Beijing, not Washington. Xi told Cheng: the world today is far from tranquil, and peace is all the more precious. Compatriots on both sides of the strait are Chinese, one family, and the desire for peace, development, exchanges and cooperation is a shared aspiration. Cheng invoked shared Chinese heritage and said Xi conveyed a very positive message. In her most consequential statement, Cheng said if her party wins Taiwan's 2028 presidential election, she would invite Xi to visit one of Taiwan's outlying islands near the Chinese coast — come to Taiwan for a walk and a look around. Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council immediately denounced the remarks: Cheng's proclaimed framework for peace is a framework for unification. The meeting has a dual purpose. Domestically: Xi is trying to shape Taiwan's politics by elevating parties open to Beijing and undercutting President Lai Ching-te's argument that Taiwan must rely on Washington. Lai has proposed an $8.75B annual military spending package. Internationally: timed directly before a Xi-Trump summit in China next month — Xi is building the narrative of China as peacemaker to argue Trump should hold off on Taiwan arms sales. Mr. Robert read: Xi is preemptively chipping at US-Taiwan alliance architecture before sitting across from Trump. Classic opening position filing. The mirror to Vance filing positive signals before Islamabad.

Trump White House Deploys Counterterrorism Machine Against Far Left — Gorka Adding Antifa To National Intelligence Priorities Framework — European Allies Skeptical — Resources Diverted From Iran Threat

Sebastian Gorka Driving Push — State Dept Designated 4 European Leftist Groups As Terrorists — Hague Workshop Planned For May — Europeans Unsure How To Respond — Iranian And Islamist Threat Teams Already Stretched

The Trump administration is deploying its global counterterrorism infrastructure against far-left movements including antifa — despite offering little evidence they present a material threat to US citizens. Sebastian Gorka, senior counterterrorism director on the NSC, has pushed to designate more far-left groups abroad as terrorist organizations and to find connections between them and Americans. In November, the State Dept designated four European leftist groups as terrorists — two Greek, one German (Antifa Ost), one Italian. None has plotted attacks on Americans in the past decade. Gorka repeatedly tells officials there are no lone wolves — language designed to create legal avenue to investigate US citizens via slender overseas connections. Trump appointees have added antifa to the National Intelligence Priorities Framework — a classified document that determines where intelligence resources focus. First time antifa has appeared on the list. State Dept is planning a May workshop in The Hague for foreign law enforcement on far-left threats. Invitees include Canada, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Hungary, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, India. So far, less interest than hoped. European reaction ranges from skeptical to flummoxed. Greek minister told local media antifa is not a terrorist group — but Greece did not oppose the designation to avoid upsetting Washington. German authorities said the threat from Antifa Ost has recently decreased considerably. The group delighted by the Antifa Ost designation: the AfD, which German intelligence has labeled a suspected extremist group. Current and former officials warn: counterterrorism resources are being redirected from Iran-related threats — teams already stretched thin from a year of firings and reassignments — to pursue a domestic political agenda.

CPI CONFIRMED 3.3% — Energy +12.5% — Gasoline Up 25% In March: Largest Monthly Increase On Record — Real Wages -0.9% — OECD: US 4.2% This Year

Highest 12-Month Inflation Rate of Trump's Second Term — Energy Component Above Estimates — Core Held at 2.6% YoY — Gas $4.15/Gallon — Airlines Shippers Retailers Adding Surcharges — Fed Holds 3.5-3.75%

March CPI confirmed at 8:32 AM Friday: 3.3% annual rate from 2.4% in February — the highest 12-month inflation rate of Trump's second term. The last time year-over-year hit 3.3% was May 2024. Energy component +12.5%, above analyst estimates. Gasoline jumped 25% in March alone — the largest single-month percentage increase on record since the EIA began tracking in 1990. Gas averaged $3.64 in March, up from $2.91 in February. Now at $4.15/gallon and projected to peak at $4.30 average in April per EIA. Core inflation (ex-food and energy) held at 2.6% YoY, +0.2% MoM — the energy shock has not yet fully spilled into services, which is the one comfort in this report. Real average wages fell 0.9% in March. Airfares up 14.9% year-over-year. Beef up 12.1% year-over-year. Shelter +3% YoY. Corporate surcharges: Delta, United, Southwest, JetBlue all raised bag fees; FedEx 26.5% fuel surcharge; Amazon 3.5% fulfillment surcharge; USPS 8% package surcharge starting April 26. Fed holds at 3.5-3.75%. OECD projects US inflation hitting 4.2% this year. Market reaction was subdued — S&P edging lower, bond yields ticking down modestly. The political pipeline: this number runs through November.

Vance Departs for Islamabad: Looking Forward to the Negotiation, Think Its Going to Be Positive — Iran: 10-Point Plan Is Basis — Both Sides Moving Toward Room Tonight

Vance Told Reporters Before Departure: Positive Tone — If Iran Negotiates in Good Faith We Extend Open Hand — If They Try to Play Us Team Is Not Receptive — Iran Deputy FM: 10-Point Plan Is Basis for Talks

Vice President Vance struck an optimistic tone as he departed for Islamabad for peace talks with Iran on Friday morning. He told reporters: we are looking forward to the negotiation, I think it is going to be positive. He added: if the Iranians are willing to negotiate in good faith, we are certainly willing to extend an open hand. If they are going to try to play us, they are going to find that the negotiating team is not that receptive. Trump gave Vance pretty clear guidelines on how to approach the negotiations. Simultaneously, Iran's deputy foreign minister for political affairs Majid Takht Ravanchi confirmed to foreign ambassadors and heads of international organizations in Tehran that it has been agreed Iran's 10-point plan will be the basis for negotiations. This is a significant pre-commitment — Tehran publicly filing the negotiating framework before Vance lands. The meeting opens Saturday morning Islamabad time — tonight late Friday Eastern. Islamabad runs 9 hours ahead of ET. Mr. Robert read: both sides announcing positive signals simultaneously on departure day is coordinated preparation. The framing is being managed. Watch whether the Lebanon condition remains a sticking point once they are in the room.

FP LatAm Brief — Venezuela 100 Days Rodriguez: GDP +12-15% Forecast — Cuba 2,000 Prisoners Released — Super El Nino Warning 2026 — Russia Interference Argentina

US Lifted 2018 Sanctions on Rodriguez This Week — Chevron +50% Venezuelan Output — Cuba Prisoner Release Plus Russia Tanker in Havana — European Forecasters: Super El Nino This Year — 2 Degrees Above Average Pacific

Foreign Policy LatAm Brief Friday April 10. Venezuela: approximately 100 days since the US captured Maduro and empowered Delcy Rodriguez. US lifted 2018 sanctions on Rodriguez this week. Chevron targeting +50% Venezuelan oil output in two years. Venezuelan economist Oliveros projects GDP growth of 12-15% this year — reversal from years of underperformance. But inflation remains 600%+ and Rodriguez has only 9% support per polling; 63% would choose Maria Corina Machado. Trump reportedly told Machado not to return to Venezuela yet. Cuba: 2,000+ prisoners freed as humanitarian gesture — rights groups say none were political prisoners; 700+ political prisoners remain. Russian oil tanker docked in Havana without US intervention — either proof Cuba deal is advancing or the blockade has holes. Argentina: Russian intelligence entity reportedly spent $280K placing articles in 20+ Argentine media outlets in 2024 targeting Milei government. Super El Nino: European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts warns of super El Nino for 2026 — Pacific water 2 degrees Celsius above average. Last super El Nino brought Panama Canal restrictions and Rio Grande do Sul floods that killed 170 people. Combined with Iran war fuel and fertilizer prices: former WFP director Cousin calls it dual pressures converging on global food crisis. Mr. Robert reconstruction portfolio: Cuba joins Venezuela, Iran, Lebanon, Syria. Western Hemisphere consolidation thesis advancing.

Islamabad Tonight — Vance vs Ghalibaf — Highest-Level US-Iran Talks Since 1979 — Lebanon Fracture Still Live — Iran: No Deal Without Lebanon Ceasefire — Netanyahu: No Ceasefire In Lebanon

Vance + Witkoff + Kushner vs Ghalibaf — First Talks of This Level Since 1979 — Iran Condition: Lebanon Must Be Included — Netanyahu: We Are Continuing Strikes — Both Delegations En Route Anyway

VP Vance leads the US delegation to Islamabad Saturday alongside special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Iran parliamentary speaker Ghalibaf leads Tehran's delegation — one of the highest-ranking Iranian officials still functioning after the US-Israeli campaign eliminated much of the senior leadership structure. This is the highest-level US-Iran engagement since 1979. Iran's pre-game: Mojtaba Khamenei published a 10-page statement declaring victory, demanding compensation for every single damage, demanding blood money for the martyred, and announcing a new phase of managing the Strait of Hormuz. That is the opening position filed before a delegation even sat down. Lebanon fracture: Iran foreign ministry spokesman said delegates won't attend if ceasefire is not extended to Lebanon. Netanyahu launched fresh Hezbollah strikes Friday morning and said there is no ceasefire in Lebanon. Both delegations are en route anyway — the Lebanon gap is deferred, not resolved. Key agenda: HEU (970 lbs), Hormuz access architecture, enrichment rights, sanctions relief, competing 10-point frameworks that neither side has publicly reconciled.

HORMUZ TRACKER — Day 3: 15 Ships Since Ceasefire vs 138/Day Pre-War — Brent Futures $97 Spot $145 — $48 Backwardation Is the Physical Supply Crunch — Nearly 800 Ships Stranded

BBC Verify 10:00 BST: 15 Ships Since Ceasefire — Only 4 Were Tankers Carrying Oil/Gas — Pre-War Baseline 138/Day — Spot Cargo $145 vs Futures $97 — Larak Detour Under IRGC Control

Standing physical metric — updated every publish. BBC Verify ship-tracking analysis as of 10:00 BST Friday: only 15 ships have crossed the Strait of Hormuz since the ceasefire was announced Tuesday evening ET. Of these, only 4 were tankers carrying oil, gas, or chemicals. Pre-war average: 138 ships per day. Nearly 800 ships remain stranded inside the Persian Gulf — most of them loaded with cargo. The backwardation is the key new signal: Brent futures trading around $97, but spot cargoes for immediate delivery near $145 per NYT reporting. That $48 spread prices two different realities simultaneously — futures price diplomatic optimism, physical cargoes price the actual supply crunch. Iran's Larak detour through Iranian territorial waters is the only viable route. Every transiting vessel must coordinate with the IRGC, be vetted, and potentially pay fees denominated in Chinese yuan or stablecoins. Shipping lawyers warn toll payments to the IRGC may violate US sanctions. Until ships are moving at scale — 50+ per day — the ceasefire has not delivered its central premise.

Mr. Robert Pivot Marker Filed — Bloomberg: Russia-Ukraine Peace Deal Signal — Budanov Optimism — If True: Watch LatAm/Greenland Architecture Accelerate

Zelensky Top Military Aide Budanov: Ukraine Nearing Russia Deal — Believes Russia Also Wants to Stop War — Mr. Robert: If True This Is Full Architecture Coming Into View

Bloomberg is running a story this morning based on words from Zelensky's top military aide and former head of military intelligence Kyrylo Budanov expressing optimism that Russia and Ukraine may be close to a peace deal. While efforts to end Europe's longest conflict since WWII have yielded limited results, Budanov expressed belief that the talks are grinding toward a settlement and that Russia also wants to stop the war. Mr. Robert is putting a marker down on this. If true — and if a deal materializes — watch the pivot architecture: LatAm (Cuba, Colombia, Panama consolidation accelerates), Asia Pacific (Taiwan posture, alliance restructuring), and Greenland deal with Denmark (the final deal will likely look like joint military, technology, and mineral rights access — both sides getting something structural). The Western Hemisphere consolidation thesis tracked in this brief since February 28 does not stop at Iran. Trump is a developer. He builds portfolios. The Iran deal, if it closes in Islamabad, is the first acquisition. The Ukraine deal clears the European board. That frees bandwidth and political capital for the next moves. He told you Cuba is next. Mr. Robert scatter-shooting — putting this marker down now.

Hormuz Tolls Now In Bitcoin: $2M Per VLCC — Iran Crypto Architecture Running Live — Western Shippers Face Sanctions Trap

Iran Oil Exporters Union: Every VLCC Paying $2M in Bitcoin — Seconds to Pay Once Email Arrives — Untraceable Unsanctionable — Iran Crypto Ecosystem $7.8B in 2025 — Mirrors Russia Playbook

Seeking Alpha / Chainalysis confirmed Friday: Iran's Hormuz toll collection is operational via bitcoin. Hamid Hosseini, spokesperson for Iran's oil, gas, and petrochemical products exporters' union: 'Every very large crude carrier transiting the strait has been paying $2M (or $1 per barrel of oil). Once the email arrives and Iran completes its assessment, vessels are given a few seconds to pay in bitcoin, ensuring they can't be traced or confiscated due to sanctions.' Iran's crypto ecosystem reached $7.8 billion in 2025 per Chainalysis. This mirrors Russia's dollar-circumvention playbook — alternative payment rails to evade the Western financial system. The paradox: Trump promised the US would be the bitcoin superpower of the world. Iran is running a live bitcoin toll collection operation at the world's most critical energy chokepoint while Vance flies to negotiate. Western shipping lawyers warn: paying the IRGC may constitute a US sanctions violation. This is the operative Hormuz question for Islamabad tonight — not whether Iran charges tolls, but who authorizes paying them.
